Tesla’s recent North American launch of the Refreshed Model Y debuted with a limited palette of just four colors: Stealth Grey, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Ultra Red, and Quicksilver. While these are undoubtedly popular choices, the constrained selection has prompted many potential buyers to wonder about the future of color options, particularly the return of beloved hues like Deep Blue Metallic.
Fortunately, insights gleaned from a recent interview with Tesla’s vehicle engineers by the Tesla Owners Club Silicon Valley provide some answers. While the news is good – more colors are indeed on the horizon – there’s a catch. These new options won’t be available immediately. Tesla is currently prioritizing the delivery of its “Launch-Series” Model Y vehicles, and the expanded color selection is expected to roll out after these initial deliveries are completed, likely sometime after May.
New Paint Options
Currently, North American customers are limited to the aforementioned four colors. While some markets, like the Asia-Pacific region, have seen the introduction of newer colors like Glacier Blue, these options haven’t yet made their way stateside. Adding to the frustration for some, popular choices like Deep Blue Metallic and black, both previously available for the Model Y, are currently unavailable for new orders.
The reason for this limited color availability isn’t a lack of desire or innovation on Tesla’s part. According to the engineering team, new colors are actively being developed. The primary bottleneck is the scaling of paint production. Just as ramping up vehicle production is a complex and time-consuming process, so too is expanding paint manufacturing capacity. Tesla is committed to ensuring a smooth and efficient production ramp before introducing a wider array of colors, prioritizing consistent delivery and quality over a vast immediate selection.
New Color Hints
Interestingly, the engineers dropped a hint about the upcoming colors. They suggested that those who “put two and two together” while browsing the Tesla website might be able to deduce which colors are coming. This implies that the new options might not be entirely brand new, but rather existing colors already offered on other Tesla models or in other regions. This makes colors like Glacier Blue (currently available in Asia), Deep Blue Metallic, and black (previously offered on the Model Y) prime candidates for a North American comeback.
In essence, it appears that Tesla’s strategy is to stabilize and optimize production before expanding the Model Y’s color offerings. It’s quite possible that this expansion will coincide with the anticipated release of the refreshed Model Y Performance. For those in the market for a Model Y but holding out for a specific color not currently available, a little patience might be the best approach. Waiting a few months could unlock a wider range of choices.
