If you have a smart meter installed, you were probably given a small, plastic screen called an In-Home Display (IHD). It sits on your kitchen counter, supposedly telling you how much energy you are using.

But let’s be honest: those standard displays are often disappointing. They lose signal if you move them too far from the cupboard, the battery life is poor, and the interface feels like it’s stuck in the 90s.

In a recent video, I explored the solution to this problem: the Octopus Home Mini.

This tiny device is changing the game for energy tracking, and it’s completely exclusive to Octopus Energy customers. If you haven’t switched yet, you can grab £50 in free credit to get you started by using the link below.

What Actually Is the Home Mini?

The Home Mini is a small, pink, unassuming square box. It doesn’t have a screen, and it doesn’t have buttons. So, what does it actually do?

Think of it as a “bridge.”

Your electricity meter talks in a language called Zigbee, which doesn’t travel very far and doesn’t connect to the internet. The Home Mini plugs into a standard wall socket, connects to your meter via Zigbee, and then connects to your home WiFi.

This allows it to beam your energy data straight to the cloud and onto your smartphone, bypassing the need for those clunky plastic displays entirely.

The Killer Feature: “Live” Data

The standout feature highlighted in the video is the “Live” tab in the Octopus Energy app.

With a standard smart meter setup, your app might only update your usage once a day, or perhaps every 30 minutes if you are lucky. That is useful for looking back at yesterday, but it’s useless for seeing what is happening right now.

The Home Mini changes that. It updates the app every 10 seconds.

Why “Live” Data Matters

Having real-time data might sound like a gimmick, but it is actually a powerful tool for saving money:

  1. Spotting “Phantom” Loads: You can turn off everything you think is running and check the app. If you are still pulling 200-300 watts, you know something (like an old game console, a TV on standby, or a greedy fridge) is draining your wallet silently.

  2. Instant Feedback: You can boil the kettle and watch the graph on your phone spike instantly. It gamifies energy saving and helps you understand exactly how much specific appliances cost to run.

  3. Troubleshooting: If your bills are high, you don’t have to wait a month to find out why. You can see the spikes as they happen.

Installation: Easier Than IKEA

Another point made in the video is just how simple the setup is. There is no drilling and no need for an engineer to visit.

  1. You plug the Home Mini into a USB power source.

  2. Open the Octopus App.

  3. Scan the QR code on the bottom of the device.

That’s it. It pairs with your WiFi and starts talking to your meter automatically. It’s significantly easier than trying to get a standard In-Home Display to reconnect once it has lost signal.

How To Get One (And £50 Free)

The Octopus Home Mini is currently free for Octopus Energy customers, though because they are in high demand, you often have to join a waitlist via their website to get one sent out.

However, you can’t get one if you aren’t with Octopus.

If you are looking to take control of your energy bills, access smart tariffs like Agile Octopus or Tracker, and get your hands on tech like the Home Mini, you need to switch.

It takes two minutes, and if you use my referral link below, we both get £50 credited to our accounts.
